Two Bergen Spots Named Best New Pizzerias

NJ.com food guru Pete Genovese has named his picks for the Best New Pizzerias in Jersey by NJ.com (Read Full Article). The two named from the area are Napoli in Cliffside Park and Urban Tomato in Palisades Park.

Napoli Wood-Fired Pizza is a wood-burning pizzeria serving thin crust Neapolitan-style pies. Genovese praised their creativity (white pie with date spread and prosciutto, and a Nduja pie) and recommended the four mushroom (standard, portobello, shiitake and white) pizza as well as the Sopressata pie (with red onions, homemade mozzarella, pecorino romano and extra virgin olive oil).

Owner Marty makes his own mozzarella and cooks his pies in an imported oven (from Naples) for less than two minutes at temperatures close to 900 degrees. They opened late last year along Anderson Avenue (Read Opening Alert).

Urban Tomato is a gas oven pizzeria serving both pizza and coffee. Genovese praised their Special Pizza (pepperoni, sausage, onions, olives, mozzarella, shiitake mushrooms) and the Spicy Honey (mozzarella, provolone bechamel, parmesan Reggiano and Mike’s Hot Honey).

Urban Tomato is run by two members of the team previously at Brick Oven Pizza in North Bergen using double deck Bakers Pride ovens. After some experimenting they’re using a trump and durum flour combination with a 65% hydration. They also exclusively serve Toby’s Estate coffee and opened just last month (Read Opening Alert).
