Denise Smith has been operating My Daughter’s Cakes in Bogota since 2009, while she was still working in the law field. She’s been cooking since she was a child with her mother, with whom she learned the art of Italian cuisine. She began gravitating towards baking and says she always had the inkling to be in the food business.

She decided to enroll at the French Culinary Institute in the city, where she took both their culinary and pastry programs. Next came the launch of her custom cake business, making cakes for weddings, showers and the like. She even taught herself the art of cake decorating. As the business grew over the last four years and needing more space, she’s now opened her own storefront, an appointment only shop for her culinary creations in Dumont.

Denise makes everything from scratch, no pre-made cake mixes or icing. She also tries to use as much organic fruit when available and stresses that her cakes are completely custom. There isn’t even a set flavor list, since she prefers to make them custom for each cake. By spending time with each customer on the affair, she focuses heavily on complimenting the menu with the flavor of the cake.

She plans on offering some retail products in her new space, plus host small showers and other events. As previously mentioned, the shop is open by appointment only, so those interested can find out more info on My Daughter’s Cakes and how to make an appointment at their website at http://www.mydaughterscakes.com.
