Pizza Rockland: The Mountain House, Sparkill, NY
Mountain House from the Back
The Mountain House is one of those popular joints that has been around for as long as we can remember. Pretty much everyone we know has been there and many go back time and time again. We typically don’t like to blog about a place that fits that criteria, but during our recent (unofficial) tour or Rockland County we knew it would be silly to not stop in for at least a pizza pie since so many had suggested it as a spot for dinner. The menu is mainly Italian food with standard American items thrown in for good measure like burgers, chicken and fries.
Checkered Tablecloths and Pizza Stands
Everyone knows the Mountain House as a pizza spot. The crust is the thin-cripsy/flaky bar pie variety. Similar to the one’s you would find at Kinchley’s Tavern in Ramsey or Star Tavern in Orange (don’t forget to check out the links from Off The Broiler on the bottom). We’re not going to get into the details of perfect pizza sauces and types of cheese that are better for pizza vs other applications. We didn’t even bother to take a picture of the bottom of the slice so you can see how cooked or burnt or whatever. Bottom Line: Go there and eat the pizza and let us know if it tastes good. We think you’ll say yes.
A Small Plain Pie
A Small Pie with Basil
The rest of the menu as we mentioend is a mix of Italian favorties and other typcial American options. There is also a smaller portioned kids’ menu and a number of desserts including a number of ice creams available. Not to be left out, but the Mountain House does have a full bar with daily drink specials for those looking to throw a few back with their pizzas (or who just come for the drinks).
Zucchini Sticks with Marinara
Chicken Parm with Spaghetti
Basket of Chicken Fingers with Fries
Cotton Candy Ice Cream? Hmmmm
