Bergen County Restaurant Turns to Community for Support to Stay Open

A Bergen County restaurant is turning to the community for support as it faces the possibility of closing.

Zendiggi Kebab House in Closter has launched a fundraising effort, with owner Keivan Tayeb and his family sharing that the business could be just weeks away from shutting down without additional support.

According to Tayeb, challenges began building over the past year and a half as costs increased and sales slowed. The growing impact of third-party delivery platforms, along with rising expenses, created ongoing financial pressure that became difficult to sustain.

This past winter further intensified those challenges, with multiple snow-related closures, extreme weather, and a nearby construction issue that forced the restaurant to shut down for several days, resulting in lost revenue and inventory.

In an effort to stabilize the business, Tayeb said the team expanded into catering and secured school lunch accounts with local schools. While those efforts helped, they were not enough to offset declines in dine-in and takeout traffic.

The restaurant’s future now depends largely on demonstrating consistent community support, particularly to its property management.

After 15 years in business, Tayeb described the response from customers since going public as overwhelming, noting a strong outpouring of support from the local community.

The decision to share the situation publicly came after considering a quiet closure, with Tayeb citing concern about disappointing longtime customers as a motivating factor.

If the fundraising goal is met, the funds will be used to catch up on rent and outstanding bills, while also providing stability to allow the business to refocus on operations.

Looking ahead, Tayeb hopes to return attention to the customer experience and continue contributing to the Old Closter community through live music, art events, and new menu offerings.

The fundraising campaign is currently active online.
