Cake It Sets Up Shop In Lyndhurst

Cake It, a new bakeshop in Lyndhurst, has moved into 242 Stuyvesant Avenue, the previous home of the dessert studio It Started With A Cupcake.

Owner Andy Carl, a formally-trained baking and pastry artist with previous experience at Carlo’s Bake Shop and local catering halls and restaurants, and his wife Lucy, a self-taught cake artist, have parlayed their pandemic home-baking for friends and families into a formal business offering custom cakes and ready-to-eat desserts “made with a lot of love.”

The Carls make everything on-site from scratch, from the batters to the fillings, fondants and icing. At the counter, expect a wide selection of cakes, cookies, lemon squares, and other desserts. There is also an impressive array of cupcakes available daily, the Vanilla Dulce De Lece being among the most popular, plus “pup cakes” for dogs (there’s a groomer across the street).

Custom cakes are where the Carls aim to show off their individual techniques. “Baking is a science and comes from the heart,” said Andy. “Each batter we make isn’t always going to be the same. And each cake can be recreated. But every customer is different. We strive hard to make people go into awe.”

Custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and other celebrations can be pre-ordered 2-3 days for simple designs, whereas cakes that are multi-layered, airbrushed or more detailed should be ordered 1-2 weeks ahead.

Gluten-free, vegan and eggless desserts can also be ordered in advance. While the bakeshop is currently taking phone and email orders, online orders are expected to be up and running this weekend.

Cake It is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12pm to 7pm – though the Carls have been welcoming customers until nearly 8pm to accommodate those coming from the local train stop and nearby schools. The store is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
