Opening Alert: Stern & Bow, Closter, NJ

Stern and Bow, the new spot from restaurateur Russell Stern, has opened in Closter. With this new endeavor, the former owner of Harvest Bistro, is aiming to bring “eclectic, regional dishes, accented with seafood specialties” to Bergen County.

The menu (View Menu) offers everything from bar bites, raw bar, pastas, meats, and seafood — specifics include items like dry-aged steaks and wood-fired pizza, along with homemade desserts. They’ve also recreated “interesting, regional cuisine” from some of Stern’s favorite destinations. To assist in menu development, he tapped Executive Chef Pasquale Frola, along with consulting Chef Paul Gerard and restaurateur Joe Castelo, co-owners of Hoboken’s Antique Bar & Bakery.

Raw bar responsibilities belong to oyster-expert Kevin Joseph, who as proprietor of Empire Oysters and the co-founder of New York Oyster Week, has cultivated the restaurant’s raw bar program — a 33 foot oyster bar showcases a daily selection of shellfish. At the oak-topped pizza bar, Neapolitan-style pies and many of the menu’s oven-roasted dishes will be on full display.

After a major overhaul, the space offers a mix of industrial, nautical, music and street art touches. These range from pendants with seafaring lights, three large arches mimicking the portholes of a sea liner, exposed beams and duct work, murals painted with abstract street art, and Stern’s own collections of art, music, and books — housed in oak niches behind the seats in the floating banquettes.

The 155 seat restaurant will be open seven days for dinner from 5:00pm-11:00pm with reservations available via phone or online. Later this fall, Stern and Bow is slated to open for lunch and brunch on Sundays.
