Opening Alert: Tao Haus, Closter, NJ

Tao Haus, a new casual eatery grounded in Hong Kong/Cantonese cuisine, has opened in Closter. With a focus on “balance of opposites” including flavors and choices, the menu will include a mix of the traditional Cantonese as well as some modern spins on dishes including items from Southeast Asia, India, Japan and more.

Ownership is no stranger to the business, they’ve worked for their family (working their way up), which operated Phoenix Garden Too in Ridgefield on Route 46 as well as a Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. Many of the dishes being served come from those family recipes.

Classic dim sum will be available all day, mainly focused on steamed items. They’ll also serve many varieties of dumplings — choices include typical fillings, but also some with organic ingredients and gluten-free/vegan options. Expect five types of noodles (examples: vermicelli, udon, pad thai, lo mein) where customers can choose a protein and sauce to complete the dish.

There’s also Chinese “tacos” and “burritos” — wrappers include moo shu pancakes, roti, scallion pancakes, or lettuce. Protein fillings like chicken, beef and multiple pork belly options will be available. A full selection of Cantonese entrees are planned, as are chopped salads and more (see full menu below).

In the front of the space is a multi-couched “lounge”, where customers can relax sipping their coffee/tea offerings. Vietnamese drip, house drip, Yin-Yang (Hong Kong coffee and tea mix), bubble tea (coming soon) and at least a dozen Chinese teas.
