Opening Alert: Phat Platters, Paramus, NJ

Phat Platters, a new restaurant specializing in platters of halal food, has opened in Paramus on Route 17. Owners Basit Memon and Yousuf Ghaffar opened Phat as they found it hard to eat halal in the area. Their chef Sagar Sharma has worked in California and Hawaii after culinary school including his family’s restaurant in Pasedena.

The menu (View Menu) is a mix of Mediterranean and American food. Platters (served on rice, salad, pita and white sauce) and Gyro (served in a pita with salad and white sauce) come with choice of protein (chicken, beef, falafel or mix). There’s also burgers, wings and sides.

They use 8 different spices for the rice, plus make all the condiments like their white sauce, hot sauce, “phat” sauce (their take on Thousand Island), and even mayo. The burger meat is a blend, though the cuts appear to be a house secret.
