Erie, a new coffee shop and bakery, has opened in Rutherford. Owned by classically trained pastry chef Renee Faris, the shop offers an array of hand-crafted items using seasonal ingredients and Cafe Grumpy coffee — the first NJ coffee shop to do so.

Faris began her career at Buddy Valastro’s mecca of baking — Carlo’s in Hoboken — she was even there for two season of Cake Boss. Culinary school followed along with stints opening restaurants in Los Angeles and then back to New York at Gramercy Tavern and was also the opening pastry chef at Maysville NYC.

The rotating menu at Erie features a rotating selection of pies, tarts, scones, muffins, cakes and cookies. Faris had a hand in the entire design process, including the “rustic” space and open kitchen. Erie is open six days a week — closed Tuesdays — from 7:00am till 6:00pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 7:00am till 8:00pm Friday, 9:00am till 8:00pm Saturday and 9:00pm till 4:00pm on Sunday.
