syros taverna

Syros Taverna, the new seafood Greek restaurant first mentioned a while back, has opened in Englewood. Owner George Mandilaras has named the restaurant after his home island in Greece: the Kini beach area of Syros.

The restaurant specializes in Authentic Greek seafood, in particular whole fish, which is picked up fresh everyday (nothing frozen) from the fish markets at New York (Bronx) docks at Hunts Point. According to staff, they will have a fish display on ice to prove that their fish are “100% fresher” than anyone else’s. (See menu below)

Chef Elias is Greek and is overseeing a full Greek staff in the kitchen. He served as the Banquet chef at the famous Garden City Hotel, to Mythos restaurant to the old Stamatis Taverna on Broadway in Astoria. He also did a six month stint at the French restaurant Caravelle where he honed his skills on French and International cooking, many of which methods he applys in the recipes he prepares at Syros.
