Porta Offshoot The Monk Room Heads North to Newark

The Monk Room Newark

Opening this January, The Monk Room in Newark is bringing “classic Neapolitan eats” to northern New Jersey. The restaurant is an offshoot of Porta in Asbury Park (which was rated Excellent by the NY Times in July) and will feature a similar menu with an emphasis on “seasonally-inspired Italian” by the Porta culinary team of Laura Brahn and Chris Calabrese.

The Monk Room’s menu will be a straight up Italian affair, with pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches. A wood-fire oven will be used to make the pizzas, with four pies being regularly featured including ingredients like fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes and homemade ricotta cheese. Pastas served will be made in-house and the 11 seat bar will feature a full wine, cocktail and beer program.

The 1200 square foot space was designed by NJ-based hospitality group Smith to feel like an Italian family’s living room, decorated with photos and traditional family heirlooms. The Monk Room has 45 seats in the dining room and will operate 7 days from 10am till 10pm when it opens next month.
