Forget the Cronut, Empanada Mania Ushers in the Cakepanada Era

The landscape of sweet fried dough treats has changed quite considerably since May, when the heavily hyped Cronut made its debut. Now in mid-August we’ve fast forwarded all the endless copycats and the foodie burger chain hybrids. And wouldn’t you know it, the team at Empanada Mania (Bergen County’s only empanada-specific restaurant in Bergenfield), has unleashed the “cakepanada” to the world.

The cakepanda is exactly as it sounds, an empanada filled with cake batter then finished with a sweet fruit reduction sauce. The two flavors that will first be available beginning the next week or so are Chocolate Raspberry and Vanilla Passion Fruit. Both made from scratch cake fillings are mixed with a homemade salted caramel cream before being stuffed into the empanada dough (and then of course fried).

It’s been quite a year from Empanada Mania, who will be celebrating their second anniversary this November. Hot off last year’s Best of Bergen – Best New Restaurant win, there have been tweaks to their empanada recipes and a few new varieties, including Asian Spicy Pork. They’ve also been aggressively hitting the local festivals this summer including the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast in Tenafly, the Feast of St. Rocco in Fort Lee, the St. Ann’s Italian Festival in Hoboken and the Red, White and Cue BBQ competition in Cresskill.
