Kickstarter Food Artisans: Peruvian & Italian Food Mashup from North Bergen

We at Boozy Burbs are big fans of crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter. For those that don’t know, Kickstarter is a website where those looking for money for a project they want to complete (music album, book, iPhone case, etc). People can donate as much or as little as they want and the project organizer provide “prize tiers” based on how much they contribute. People usually fund amounts that are equivalent to what the retail price would be for the iPhone case, music album, etc.

From their site:
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.

Those projects include food-based endeavors as well. Enter Delizioso Peccato, a couple from North Bergen (the town) NJ, trying their hand at combining food from their Peruvian roots with those of their beloved Italian favorites. They are both passionate cooks who are trying to get a business off the ground with minimal seed money through Kickstarter ($1500).

New Classical Empanada with meat, corn and herbs

After 2 years of experimenting (and endless requests from friends for more food), they will be using the money to procure equipment and ingredients to produce Salty and Sweet Snacks. The Salty Snacks come in the form of 4 empanadas : Full Meat (sausage and meat mixture), New Classical (meat, corn and herbs), American (cheese, pineapple, ham, chicken and homemade paprika based sauce) and Vegan Green Garden (mushroom, zuchinni, artichoke and Bechamel sauce). The Sweet Snack is a 100% Peruvian Turron, a sweet that is traditionally prepared for the Señor de los Milagros or Lord of Miracles celebration.

Of course like many food Kickstarter campaigns, most of the prize tiers involve getting a certain number of the items they will be producing from their fundraising. $8 gets you an empanda, postcard with special thanks for helping and mention on their website. $17 gets you a brick of the super sweet Turron. If you pony up $800, you’ll be entitled to 180 empanadas, 2 bricks of Turron, all their recipes and a how to video!
