Historically, the Highwood Square building has hosted many food estabilshments, the current being Mr. Wok and Simply Vietnamese.  With the closing of Sparkie’s Pizza in Tenafly, we’ve been waiting for the space to open with the hope of it being another restaurant. It has re-opened and in it’s place now stands Europe Cafe & Grill, serving Mediterranean specialties.

We were actually surprised to hear they were serving Mediterranean food, considering their are many places (including a few new this year: Yasou Mykonos, Zendiggi Kebab House) serving similar style food in the area (we won’t get into the specific differences between Greek, Turkish, Persian, foods). Tenafly is sometimes lamented for it’s lack of diversity in its dining scene, so places like Europe Cafe would likely help change that.

The space has changed a bit since Sparkie’s. The general layout is the same but the furniture, stemware, silverware and pretty much everything else has been upgraded.  The room certainly has a fancier feel than before, but still casual enough for a quick lunch or other meal (We noticed substantial natural light from the outside during the day).

The menu has a selection of many familiar cold entrees (humus) and salads. There is also a section of thin crust pies (like pizzas) with various toppings of meat, cheese, potatoes, etc. The sheer number of items on the menu is quite large (44 to be exact, not including desserts) with an array of meats from the grill. There is also a lunch special available. Monday thru Friday from 11am to 3pm, $12 gets you a soup or salad, appetizer and a main course. They are also offering delivery, though it is not clear to which towns.
